Tips for Working Online

Working from home offers lots of flexibility. However, this luxury may turn into a missed opportunity if it lacks certain structure. Home offices can be challenging in surprising ways. At home, there are many distractions and communication with team members is limited. These tips will help you organize and be effective at your job.

  1. Maintain regular hours

The best thing you can start with is creating a consistent schedule for yourself. Having clear working hours helps many remote workers maintain work-life balance. Plan more complicated tasks for high-productivity periods. You may use automatic time-tracking apps to help yourself with that.

  2. Take breaks

It is so easy to get distracted as a remote worker that you may tend to avoid breaks altogether. Don't do that! It affects your productivity. Take clear breaks. Go for a short walk, enjoy some fresh air at the balcony, or have lunch with your flatmate.

  3. Create an office at home

The level of comfort is probably the best thing about remote work. But this comfort may lower your productivity. When the surrounding gives you work vibes, it’s easier to focus. For this reason, you should set up an office-like corner at home. Get a comfy, supportive chair, spacious desk and consistent workplace tools.

  4. Eat clean, and get enough sleep

Eat well when working from home, and avoid running to the kitchen to grab an unhealthy snack every hour. With the right food, you keep energy levels high. It’s also vital to keep a proper sleep schedule. Avoid working late or binge-watching shows at night, assuming that you may always start your working day a bit later, in case you need more sleep. Stick to your routine.

  5. Prepare a to-do list

It’s a list of tasks to be completed on a given day, organized in order of priority. Self-tracking helps you understand your patterns of productivity and provides you with a clear overview of your progress.

  6. Leave home and socialize

Loneliness and isolation are common problems in remote work life, especially for extroverts. Even if you're introverted and don't like socializing, avoid spending weeks at home all alone. Go to a café, library or co-working space to break up the monotony of being at home.
