How to Save Money on Your Electricity Bill in Winter

Winter means higher bills for most households, as heating accounts for almost a half of the average energy costs. What is more, many people spend more time and home during the cold months, which may increase overall energy use. Shorter days with a string of holidays add up to a significant bill. Learn how to save electricity in winter by conserving energy. Keep reading and check out our tips!

  1. Weatherstrip the doors and windows

Doors and windows cause a lot of heat to leaking out, due to the panes cooling down from the frosty outside air, in addition to leaks in seals. You can reduce the heat loss by installing weatherstripping around them and sealing the space between the doors and the door frames.

  2. Lower the thermostat

It’s the easiest way to save energy. Are you sure that you need to heat your home up as high as 75 or 80 degrees? Lowering the temperature to 68 or even 65 degrees can result in significant savings. You may also change your thermostat to a smart one that optimizes the heating temperature by turning it down while you’re sleeping or when you’re away and setting it warmer just before your arrival - these dynamic thermostats learn your preferences and make adjustment based on weather information from the internet, resulting in significant overall savings to your heating bill.

  3. Stay warm with blankets and socks

Get used to wearing comfy sweaters, socks and sweatpants at home. You’ll also need thick blankets at night. By dressing warmly, you can keep the thermostat at a lower temperature and still stay comfy.

  4. Adjust the water heater temperature

A water heater may be using more energy than you think, especially if it’s an older model. Consider changing it to a newer one. You may also wrap it in a blanket to provide an additional layer of insulation, reducing electricity or gas spent to keep the water hot.

  5. Check the insulation in your house

Quality insulation is a good way to reduce your electricity bills in winter. Remember to add insulation in the attic - it helps you to keep more heat in the living areas.

  6. Use electric heaters to heat small spaces

If you need to heat a small area for a short time, use a space heater. Electric space heaters are a great way to heat a small enclosed area like your garage or a bathroom. They’re not energy efficient enough for heating the whole house, but they’re perfect for heating closed-off spaces for short periods of time.

  7. Unplug unused electronics

Many appliances use energy even when they are in the stand-by mode. You can save by unplugging the devices which are not used.
