Free Online Tools to Keep in Touch with Family and Friends

Whether you are permanently living abroad or just stuck at home because of COVID prevention measures, you can use apps and tools to stay in touch with your loved ones. Video conferencing allows participants to access a live video feed and see everyone in the group at the same time. It’s a perfect solution for multiple people in different locations wishing to chat with each other. Check out the following online tools and keep in touch with your family and friends no matter where you are.

  1. FaceTime

    This tool is reserved only for iOS and Mac. It’s very easy to use - you only need to click on a + icon at the top of the screen to add a participant. 

  2. Skype

    Skype has been the leader of the video conferencing system for years. It’s free and easy to use. You can make unlimited video or audio calls with up to 50 people, record the calls and use screen sharing mode.

  3. Facebook Messenger

    To make a call via Facebook Messenger, you don’t even need telephone numbers. You can just add anyone who has a Facebook account. The length of the calls is unlimited, and you don’t have to install anything.

  4. Google Meet

    It’s an easy way to schedule calls with up to 30 people. The tool is fully integrated with Google Workspace, so the participants can join the meetings directly from their calendar or email invite. 

  5. WhatsApp

    It’s a mobile app for texting, sending voice messages and video chatting. However, you need an active phone number to register first.

  6. Zoom

    Zoom has become very popular in the last months, especially as a meeting platform for businesses. Many people use it to keep in touch with family and friends, too. Unfortunately, there is a limit of 40 minutes for calls with more than 3 people.

  7. WeChat

    This tool lets you create a group video call. To start a call, you only need to click on the + icon and select the participants. Once the meeting has started, you have control over the camera feed and microphone.
