Computer Bundles Available From The Los Angeles Public Library

The Los Angeles Public Library has been offering various online resources to help people get through the pandemic. Recently it launched Tech2Go, which provides computer bundles (including a laptop and a hotspot) for long-term use at home. These bundles help individual students and families that do not have access to electronic devices at home.

Tech2go Computer Bundles come with a Chromebook laptop device. They can be used at any location, although the internet service plans they come bundled with are available for use only within the U.S. The U.S. hotspot plan offers you unlimited data. The allowance countdown visible on the device resets every month, but the internet is available even if the countdown reaches 0 GB. However, you might experience slower speeds outside of the monthly cap, which is what the countdown tracks. The content is not filtered, but the devices have to comply with CIPA rules, which may require some sites to be blocked.

This service is free of charge for Los Angeles residents! The program has been funded by the Emergency Connectivity Fund, administered by the Federal Communications Commission.

How to Use the Service

Tech2go Computer Bundles are available to adult users with a library card who are willing to sign a Mobile Device User Agreement with the library. They can be picked up in the locations listed on LAPL’s website. If you are interested, you can call or visit the location nearest you to pick up a device or add yourself to the waiting list. The computer bundles are available until the end of June 2022 and are non-renewable.

Don’t forget to return the devices to the location where you borrowed them, together with the original packaging and accessories. They should be fully charged before you return them. Overdue computer bundles will be remotely locked and have the internet services deactivated. After being returned, the devices are reset to ensure all the data is erased.

Potential Issues and Solutions

If you need technical assistance, you should contact the LAPL Cybernaut. If you are having trouble with a hotspot device that LAPL has already provided, you may need to contact T-Mobile customer support.

If any devices have been lost or damaged, you need to contact the location where you picked them up to report the issue. In case of theft, you will be asked to file a police report.
